This 1920 two story Bungalow in central Houston Heights is fully renovated inside and out, with a downstairs addition for a new master bedroom, master bath, utility / laundry room, and screen porch. The linear addition is extended South into the abandoned drive, and garage access flipped to the back paved alley. This maximizes yard space, and provides North light for the open addition and shade in the courtyard. An informal secondary entrance has been introduced in the link between the existing house and new addition. The master bed and bath have high operable windows and double doors for natural light and access to a tall screen porch running the full length and transitioning to the rear courtyard. The existing kitchen has been expanded and opened to the back courtyard with high banks of tall operable windows for ventilation and light. Rooms are opened to one another and hallways minimized throughout. The original central masonry chimney was uncovered and left exposed. Long continuous deck steps run the entire rear of the house providing informal seating around a central fire pit in the courtyard.
The recessed areas of the new addition including the entrance and screen porch, are sheathed in galvanized metal with horizontal lap joints. The remaining exterior addition utilizes smaller proportioned wood siding to contrast the original structure. Wood bead board covers the high sloping ceiling throughout the addition interior and exterior. Recycled pine floors continue from the existing through the new addition. The entire house is unified with a new galvalume standing seam metal roof.
